Mourvèdre is not often celebrated solo, but young Tuscan winemaker Manuel Di Vecchi Staraz does wonders with it in Roussillon. From a high-altitude single vineyard of thirty year old vines planted over schist, the grapes spent five days macerating on the skins before being pressed to old barrels for nine months of rest. Bottled by the litre, this is brooding, deep and intense, with a promise of ageing wonderfully.
