Dinner Red. This is a sophisticated, balanced, silky red wine that is (in our opinion) made for red meat. “A French Wine made by a Japanese man”. We don’t really sell much Merlot but when we got this call we made an exception, hailing from Hiroshima, it was a wine by the infamous Osamu Uchida after all. This Merlot is like no Merlot we’ve ever tried before. It’s not overly ‘oaked’, not headachey, extracted raisin juice, like the stuff your mate gets from his local supermarket. This is special. Only 900 bottles of this wine were produced and it's absolutely delicious.
Some time ago Osamu left endurance racing after meeting a lover of German wines. This meant moving to Bordeaux in ‘99 and visiting hundreds of wineries. He obtained a bac viti-oeno and trained at Domaine de Chevalier and at Château Larrivet Haut-Brion before becoming an importer of wine back into Japan. But then in 2006 he resisted the urge and moved back to Bordeaux to start his winemaking journey. After a short stint as a tourist guide he acquired 60 acres of vines. Now he has 2 hectares in conversion to organic and biodynamic agriculture. He keeps a very tight ship, and basically vinifies in almost secrecy in his garage.
